Ophelia

Sitting in a shallow pool of water is a large female figure with long swirling hair. In her hands, she cradles my body, still overflowing with emotions. A bright star, smaller this time, surrounds my body while smaller stars fall from my eyes.

This Angel, named Ophelia, is the manifestation of my sorrow, depression, and melancholy. All the sad emotions that come with heartbreak. After the initial wave of intense emotions, comes processing the event and with that is pure sadness. I believe that it’s important to allow yourself
to feel sad, cry, and mourn what could have been. The stars falling from my eyes represent my tears. In this I allow myself to cry, weep, and feel so the emotions can exit my system and float away down the river.

In this piece, Ophelia cradles my crying body, allowing me to
feel intensely while her sad yet calm expression is sympathizing.
Supporting, comforting, and gentle.

Ophelia, my Angel, was designed and named after Sir John Everett Millais’ painting of the same name. I typically draw my Ophelia either floating or sitting in water. Resting in a body of water can encapsulate a sense of sadness and grief, like shown in the Millais’ painting. In my
piece, the stars falling from my eyes into the water is a reference to Millais’s painting, which depicts flowers alongside Ophelia floating down the river.
